<p>The unit was established as the 301st Fighter Wing with P-47s at Seymour Johnson Field in October 1944 as a B-29 escort unit for western Pacific operations. The 301st was based at several locations in Okinawa with P-61s and P-80s before inactivating in January 1949. The unit was reactivated as the 301st TFW at Carswell AFB in July 1972, and operated the F-105D (including the Thunderstick II version) until 1981 when the unit re-equipped with the F-4D. The wing upgraded to the F-4E in August 1987 before exchanging the Phantom for the F-16C in December 1990.
